The aims for Maths at Girton Glebe build on our school vision of equipping our pupils for life by developing the essential skill of mathematics.
Since September 2018, we have been embedding a mastery approach to the teaching and learning of mathematics. This is a gradual process, which will take several years to embed. The rationale for this approach lay with research and the work of the NCETM and Maths Hub Mastery Specialist Programme, which focus on 5 Big Ideas:
Through the mastery approach to mathematics, we aim:
- To develop a growth mindset about the ability to learn mathematics,
- To develop a positive attitude towards the subject,
- For our pupils to become confident and proficient with number, including fluency with mental calculation and the ability to identify connections between numbers,
- To create problem solvers. Pupils can reason, think logically, work systematically and apply their knowledge of mathematics to the world,
- To develop mathematical language which children can use accurately,
- To give a real-life context to the teaching and learning of mathematics.
