We use a balanced range of assessments to understand how well pupils are progressing in reading, writing and spoken language. These assessments help us respond quickly, provide targeted support and ensure high expectations for every child.
How We Measure Impact
We use a combination of:
- Little Wandle phonics and spelling assessments (EYFS–KS1)
- PiRA termly standardised reading assessments
- GaPS termly grammar, punctuation and spelling assessments
- NGRT (twice yearly) to assess reading comprehension and reading behaviours
- Ongoing teacher assessment through Book Club discussions, writing conferences and classroom talk
- Pupil voice, learning walks and book looks
- Internal and trust-wide moderation to ensure consistency and accuracy
What This Means for Our Pupils
As a result of our coherent, research-informed English curriculum, pupils at Girton Glebe:
- Read fluently and with deep comprehension
- Write with clarity, purpose and increasing independence
- Speak confidently, listen respectfully and contribute thoughtfully
- Use ambitious vocabulary across the curriculum
- Apply their skills effectively in inquiry and real-world contexts
- By the end of Year 6, pupils leave us as confident readers, purposeful writers and articulate communicators who are well-prepared for the next stage of their education.
