At Girton Glebe, we believe that physical education and sport have a vital role to play in the physical, social, emotional and intellectual development of children. Physical education and sport are important in giving children the knowledge, understanding and the tools to make a positive impact on their own health and well-being.
The physical education curriculum at Girton Glebe aims to give pupils’ increasing self-confidence through an ability to manage themselves successfully in a variety of situations. Our PE activities are carried out in a safe and supportive environment, where effort and hard-work, as well as success, are celebrated.
During their time at Girton Glebe, children take part in PE including: games, dance, gymnastics, swimming, outdoor adventurous activities and athletics. As well as a highly inclusive PE curriculum, we provide a broad range of extra-curricular sporting activities that give all children who are interested the chance to take part in regular exercise and friendly competitions.
In 2014-15 the children at Girton Glebe participated in a wide range of special sporting events and activities. From playing football with Norwich City players on Red Nose Day to showcasing our gymnastic talent for Cambridge Swim and Dive, from our fantastic Sports Day on the recreation ground to participation in tournaments including ‘Kwik’ cricket and lawn tennis with Cambridge Lawn Tennis Club, the children have had the opportunity to engage in a broad variety of physical activities. Every year group had the opportunity to take part in a sporting festival at Impington Village College, and the summer term was all about swimming, with the children enjoying the use of our own school pool during PE lessons and at the after-school swimming clubs and FOGG’s family swim sessions.
For school sporting events, either whole school or per year group, the children engage in friendly competition through their house teams. Our houses are named after Cambridge colleges and have a house colour: Trinity (Red), Churchill (Green), Newnham (Blue) and Robinson (Yellow). House Captains are elected from our Year 6 pupils, and lead their house at whole school events.
